Review
The twin sister duo of Tegan Rain Quin and Sara Keirsten Quin, appropriately titled Tegan & Sara, released their sixth album Sainthood to much critical acclaim. The album was also shortlisted on Canadian’s version of the Grammy’s, the Polaris Music Prize. Needless to say critics dig this album, but the question remains (as always with critics) will everyday listeners dig this album. I’d have to say, it could go either way, honestly.
Tegan & Sara’s vocal sound is very peculiar; when they’re on the radio you can instantly tell it’s them. I have heard that the mark of a good band is its unique sound, so following that logic you could say that this band has talent. And they do- but to what degree can the average listener enjoy them? This album is the most mainstream, radio-friendly set they’ve yet produced, so this is a great primer for new listeners.
The first track, “Arrow,” is a brilliant piece that showcases the popular Power Pop/Indie Rock sounds incorporating elements of rock, pop, and new wave. “Arrow” is a great example of the talent of Tegan & Sarah and the catchiness of their music. It’s fast, it’s energetic, and it’s memorable. Those are three qualities you’d wish for in every track of any album. The next song, “Don’t Rush”, is more serious, more guitar-driven and features the twins singing together in much of the song (which is a common performance). The rest of the album is essentially the same format, switching between a serious rock sound and a swaggering power-pop collection with standouts in “The Cure,” “Hell,” and “Sentimental Tune.”
Overall, this album is a good, catchy light rock affair. As long as you are attuned to their vocal sound you will enjoy the ride that is SainthoodB+
